Emergency and Urgent Care

What signs mean a pet needs urgent veterinary care?

  • Respiratory issues, such as gasping or rapid breathing
  • Collapse
  • Fainting
  • Inability to stand
  • Seizures, tremors, or unusual neurological episodes
  • Signs of severe pain, distress, or discomfort, such as crying, hiding, or refusing to move
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Major injuries, accidents, falls, or other forms of trauma
  • Any possible exposure to toxins, poisons, medications, or harmful substances
  • Sudden weakness, inability to walk normally, or a noticeable decrease in mobility
  • Loss of balance, coordination problems, stumbling, or other changes in movement
  • Repeated vomiting, especially when combined with other concerning symptoms
  • Severe or ongoing diarrhea, particularly if your pet appears unwell or dehydrated
  • Difficulty urinating, straining to urinate, or changes in normal bathroom habits
  • Extreme lethargy, unusual tiredness, or a lack of normal responsiveness
  • Sudden changes in behaviour, awareness, appetite, or interaction with family members
  • Swollen or painful abdomen, sudden bloating, or signs of abdominal discomfort
  • Pale gums, changes in gum colour, or signs of poor circulation
  • Sudden changes in vision, eye appearance, or signs of eye pain

If you notice anything unusual about your pet’s health, behaviour, appetite, mobility, or energy level, call us at 519-659-4000 right away. Services and Medical Care

What veterinary services do you offer?

We provide a wide range of Veterinary Services for dogs and cats, including wellness examinations, vaccinations, diagnostics, surgery, dental care, preventive care, nutritional support, and more. We also work closely with you to design a therapeutic diet for your pet.

Our team takes the time to understand your pet’s individual needs and develop care recommendations that support their health throughout every stage of life.

You can contact us by calling 519-659-4000 or by using our Contact page to learn more about our services and schedule an appointment.

Does Highbury North Pet Hospital offer X-rays and diagnostic imaging?

Yes. We provide modern Veterinary Diagnostics services, including X-rays, to screen pets and pinpoint health concerns. Diagnostic imaging can provide valuable information when evaluating injuries, illnesses, internal conditions, and other medical concerns. We use the information from bloodwork and other tests, along with your pet’s history and examination results, to see the complete picture of your pet’s health and recommend appropriate care.

What are therapeutic prescription diets, and when might my pet need one?

Therapeutic and prescription diets are specially designed to support pets with specific health conditions, such as urinary issues, skin conditions, kidney disease, digestive disorders, and weight management concerns.

Nutritional support can be very beneficial in managing certain conditions and helping pets maintain a better quality of life. These diets may be recommended as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to help manage certain conditions and support your pet’s overall well-being.

Does Highbury North Pet Hospital provide dental care for dogs and cats?

Yes. We provide Veterinary Dentistry services to help support your pet’s oral health and overall well-being. Dental disease is one of the most common health concerns we see in dogs and cats and can contribute to discomfort, difficulty eating, infection, and other health concerns if left untreated.

Our dental care approach includes oral examinations, professional dental cleanings, and recommendations based on your pet’s individual needs. During a dental procedure, we may also recommend dental X-rays to evaluate areas below the gum line that cannot be seen during a visual examination.

Regular dental care, combined with appropriate at-home pet dental care support, can help protect your pet’s comfort and maintain a healthier mouth throughout their life. If you have concerns about your pet’s breath, teeth, gums, eating habits, or oral health, contact our team at 519-659-4000 or use our Contact Page to learn more.

Preventative Care and Ongoing Support

How can I request a refill of my pet’s medication?

If your pet needs a refill, you can submit a request online. We recommend requesting refills in advance to allow ample time for review and preparation.

All medication requests are reviewed and authorized by one of our veterinarians before they are filled. If your pet’s health status or treatment needs have changed, we may recommend an appointment or additional evaluation before approving a refill.

You can contact us at 519-659-4000 or use our online Contact Page if you have questions about your pet’s medication.

How can I prepare for my pet’s appointment?

Preparing for your pet’s appointment can help our veterinary team provide the most complete care possible. Before your visit, consider making a note of any changes in your pet’s behaviour, appetite, activity level, or health. Bringing information about your pet’s current medications, diet, and previous medical history can also help us better understand their needs. We would also suggest filling out our New Client Registration form.

If you have specific concerns or questions, we encourage you to share them with our team during your appointment so we can work together to support your pet’s health.
